Trinidad Carnival 2005 was as always an exhilarating
experience. Shurwayne Winchester's "Dead or Alive" really had no
competition for the Road March
title.
In the savannah, it seemed that every section of every Band used the
song's percussions based intro to build up the adrenaline of
masqueraders just before they burst onto the Big Stage !
Officially, for Mardis Gras "MASQUERADE" won
the band of the year. Unofficially, in our opinion, the Band of the
Day was "TRIBE"
who
burst onto the stage after 9:00 in the evening with the kind of energy
you would have expected at 9:00 in the morning.
The
split of "LEGENDS" band gave birth to "LEGACY"(Big Mike) and
"GENESIS"(Ian McKenzie). LEGACY appeared to have retained a larger
number of LEGENDS faithful. The featured a grand entrance with a rhythm
section on stage that provided background music for well choreographed
presentations of Dancers and Moko Jumbies.
GENESIS featured a smaller but closely knit
group of revelers with
it's
own unique personality. The groups cohesion had a kind of "family" feel
to it, underscored by the lead-in of Ian, his wife and daughter who
greeted the Savannah crowd as well as the Judges.
Memorable moments of the weekend included the two
encounters/clashes between Denise Belfor and AJ from BETs 106th and
park, during Girl Power and Insomnia. In the end I think it was a tie
because AJ was smart enough to lift Denise off the ground so she could
not use the leverage of her "Low Center of Gravity" !!!

AJ also made an appearance on stage Monday night with
POISON, crossing the stage while scores of women tried to finish what
Denise started.
Trinidad Carnival officials said this was a record
year for attendance and participation. In fact, they are now concerned
that the Savannah is no longer big enough or equipped to meet the
needs of Carnival at the rate it is growing. New alternatives are
already being discussed and has caused a lot of buzz in the local media.
However,
there's no need for concern because nothing, it seems can stop Carnival.
And, regardless of where its held it will always be...."The
Greatest Show on Earth."
